Component
that serves as the heart of the motor is the armature (anchor) and
coils that surround the armature shaft is called the armature coil (coil anchor). At
the end of the cylindrical armature and consists of a number of
segments/copper parts separated by an insulator called a commutator
mica (commutator). Commutator function for the electric current can continuously flowing into the armature coil via carbon brushes ( brush ) that directly rub against him . As for a more detailed discussion of the components of the starter motor is as follows ( see figure 1 . Below) :a. Field coil (field coil)Field coils made of copper plates and serve to generate a magnetic field (number 2a figure 3.) . Field
coil connected in series with the armature coil (coil anchor) , so
that the current through the field coil is also flowing into the
armature coil . Field coil only in motorcycle starter motor type that uses an electromagnet (magnetic remanence/not permanent). In the motorcycle that uses a permanent magnet type starter motor does not use the field coil. Permanent magnet type starter motor and weighs more compact form light , so it is widely used in today's small motorcycle (see figure 1).

b. armature
Armature consisting of a cylindrical iron and slots, the armature shaft (armature shaft), the commutator and armature coil (armature coil). Armature serves to change electrical energy into mechanical energy, in the form of rotary motion. (Figure 2 and Figure 3 numbers 3 and 3a).

The number of armature coil winding is made a lot so that more strands of wire that gets the electromagnetic force (lines of magnetic force), so that the power generated is large enough to rotate cankshaft (crankshaft).
c. Yoke and pole cores
Yoke (stator) serves as a place to tie the pole cores (numbers 2 and 2b figure 3.). Yoke is made of cylindrical metal. While the pole core functions to sustain and strengthen the field coil magnetic field
posed field coil.
d. Brush (brush)
Brush (brush) made of soft copper, and serves to pass an electric current to the field coil of the armature coil directly to the masses through a commutator (numbers 10 and 11 picture 3.). For permanent magnet type starter motor (not using the field coil), the brush will pass an electric current from the battery directly to the armature and then to the masses through a commutator. Motorcycle starter motor in there that has two brushes (one brush posisitf and one negative brush) and brush four (two positive and two brush brush negative) depends on the engine load to be played. Usually the starter motor with four brush only used on a large motorcycle.

In the motor housing (stator) tied field coil (field coil) and the pole core (core poles) which serves to generate a magnetic field. Usually there are four pole cores and field coil windings that have a number of quite a lot so that the magnetic field generated greater. To increase the torque produced by the motor turn aside with the sprocket teeth ratio (pinion) on the starter motor with a gear on the crankshaft sprocket, then at one end of the armature there is a gear reduction. With gear reduction ratio of rounds coming out / output becomes smaller, so that the moment of rotation will be larger.
e. Starter relay / solenoid switch (starter magnetic switch)
Starter relay (solenoid switches) on a motorcycle there are simple and are adopting from the starter relay which is used in cars such as the type of pre-engaged starter (starter relay directly attached at the top of the starter motor). The starter relay is a kind of simple means ordinary relay consists of a coil and four terminals and spaced apart from the starter motor (see Figure 4 in the previous discussion). Starter relay is generally used in small motorcycles.

Figure 4. Simple starter relay and circuit |
Starter relay (solenoid switch) pre-engaged starter type commonly found on larger bikes. This solenoid duty as a relay, connect a large current from the battery to the starter motors (through the moving contact or contacts that could move the plate due to magnetization) with the help of a small amount of electric current that is controlled from the ignition. There are two coils in a pre-engaged starter type, namely the pull-in coil and holding coil. Pull-in coil duty pull the plunger against the spring (spring) until contact is connected, and a holding coil in charge of holding (hold) are interested in the position so that the plunger contacting persists. Shift lever (lever activator) also served to shifting (shifting) the pinion gear (pinion gear) next to the starter motor linked to the flywheel gear (flywheel).

Overrunning clutch / starter clutch (starter clutch) and pinion gear duty distribute torque (rotating force) generated the starter motor to the flywheel (flywheel) and prevent excessive rotation (overrunning) carried by the rotation of the shaft due to the starter motor when the engine has been living and docking between the pinion gear and the flywheel is still going on.
